My love is like a double bass

I've always wanted to play the double bass.

It reminds me of an old lover; an older man. It reminds me of M, my grand amour. To those who don't know him intimately, he seems old and clumsy but is imbued with an irresistible charm. Warm and familiar, his presence is comforting as it envelops me, like an old sweater that you can't bring yourself to throw away.

A double bass is an older man who was obviously handsome in his youth and still retains traces and echos of his former beauty, traces that run deep as the lines around his eyes that accompany his melancholy smile when he teases me about how young I am compared to him. But each line is perfect because it belongs to him. Despite his age, he dances and moves with lightness and airy grace. A soul inspired.

I put my arms around him and, as I place my hands on him, a low, deep voice sighs and murmurs softly with pleasure at my butterfly caresses. We sing together in simple and perfect purity, our hearts fused in an instant of mutual comprehension that transcends the earthly to become celestial.

That's what it's like playing a double bass.

Running with that picture... Cellos are so sexual. This is why Hilary and Jackie is such a stupidly great film.

I'm glad you picked up on the picture. I felt that it pretty much summed up the tone of the text. I agree that there is something oh so wonderfully erotic about squeezing a cello or double bass between one's thighs and absorbing its earthy resonance as you draw the bow across the strings. Miam!

As M is a musician (opera singer, conductor, double bass player...&c) I thought it an appropriate allegory.

I'm a musician too (though not so fortunate be a conductor), and you don't play the double bass between the legs... If you do, then I'm astounded and in love.

Re-reading my posts I realise I didn't make it clear that the intrinsic sexiness of the double bass is why I want to *learn* it (I haven't started yet). Though, from my scant knowledge of stringed instruments (I used to be a violinist and bass guitarist but nowadays stick to singing) I think it *may* be possible to play it between your legs if you're on a stool and gripping it from the narrow side...might be something to try next time I'm browsing Chappell's. Maybe the fact that it is rooted in the realms of fantasy and I can imagine such a scenario is why it's sexy.

Maybe one day I shall be hopelessly disappointed.

Agreed. I am also a double-bass fan, though I'd never thought of it as particularly sexy before...good points, there.

I've heard that it's possible for girls to orgasm within three minutes of playing Elgar's Cello Concerto. I'll never be able to watch it in the same way again.

And Athene, maybe you're right, maybe it can go between the legs. Let me know how it goes...
